Gutta Percha Balls (Cat #: GPS1 - GPH1) First introduced in 1848, the Gutta Percha ball revolutionised the game of golf. Made of the white milky fluid from the Palaquium genus of trees, the rubber material was heated then shaped into a sphere, first by hand but later using moulds made from machined metal. Early "gutties" were almost completely smooth, but as they got older and more nicked they tended to fly better. As a result, ballmakers, caddies and players all took their turn in scarring the ball to improve its aerodynamic qualities. The four styles available from the collection include Smooth, Bramble, Mesh Pattern and Hand Hammered. |
