South Coast Cultural Tourism

"The South Coast, from Berry, in the northern part of the Shoalhaven to the Victorian border, is a place of great visual and scenic beauty. A pristine coastal environment, where the forest wilderness meets the Pacific Ocean; marked by majestic geological landforms, undulating green hills and serene estuarine wetlands, this environment has, for thousands of years supported the indigenous peoples, their spirit, lifestyle and culture.

Born, nurtured and succoured in the cradle of this natural heritage, a unique 20th century South Coast tradition and ethos has grown and developed, merging beach, bush, pioneer, farming, holiday, urban and artisan cultures into one."

OUR MISSION

To develop and promote Cultural Tourism on the South Coast of NSW

What is Cultural Tourism?

Cultural Tourism encompasses cultural activities & experiences that attract visitors and enhance their visit.

These activities include visits to Fine Art & Craft Galleries, Artists' Studios, Restaurants, Wineries, Traditional Industries (Cheese Factories etc.), Craftspeople at work, Musical and Literature events, Community Festivals, Theatre & Performance, Film & Cinema, Koori Lifestyle & Arts, Historic Houses and Heritage Sites both European & Aboriginal, Ethnic Festivals and Community Celebrations.

Cultural Tourism is about immersing in and enjoying the lifestyle of the local people, the local area and what gives it identity and character. It is not about meaningless consumerism.

What is Our Approach?

Our Committee comprises Garry & Di Ellis, Allan Baptist, Bronwyn Clarke, Tom Phillips, Col Waller, Lee Leith, Ruth Peters and David Reynolds and has been established since September 1995. We have been working on the following :

  • Inviting journalists on 2 day tours visiting culture based sites
  • Providing culturally based information on radio and in press
  • Creating local and visitor awareness of cultural assets using a "Cultural Lifestyle" Map presenting the array of cultural assets & experiences on the South Coast
  • Creating Cultural Loops and trails in the form of postcards
  • Initiating, facilitating and supporting Cultural Events such as the successful "100 South Coast Visions" held at Bundanon in March, 1997.
  • Advertising and promoting Cultural product and activities in Tourism & Arts magazines
  • Attracting funding from State, Federal and Local Government to develop the above
